years ago in Toronto the guy running the big convention asked Jim Lee and myself if we would like to attend the invitation-only ( very expensive) Shatner versus Nimoy panel on the house. of course we said yes.
as soon as the panel started you suddenly realize that these guys invented the convention panel. there was no convention panels before these guys. and the reason that suddenly hit me is because they were so excellent that it. it was an art they had mastered. they invented it and mastered it.
convention paneling is an art unto itself. trust me. especially for people who spend a lot of time alone in their room working.
these two got on stage and busted each other’s balls and busted the audience’s balls for over 40 minutes before they even got to questions. Shatner was talking about ironing his shirt for 10 minutes in preparation for today and the audience ate it up. people paid a lot of money to be in this room and they were completely happy.
at one point Nimoy pointed to a very hard yet attractive looking woman in the audience who was wearing a metal bikini and giant metal demon’s wings and said hi to her in that ‘I can get away with flirting with you in public because I am an old man’ way and she barked: I AM THE DARWERWT!! this SWORN enemy of the Vulcan!!
Shatner just looks at him and says: that was your fault. the audience roared.
some guy in a old school Star Trek outfit and literally tape on his glasses stood up and asked: in episode 14 when the salt sucker monster…
the audience just burst out laughing for like two minutes. Shatner and Nimoy never answered the question and just let the laugh be.
they invented the convention panel. I felt like I had seen Eric Clapton play Layla live.
